Personal Challenge 2018 - Week 17

This is the 17th week of my personal 50-week "States of the Union" Challenge. Each week I research one of the 50 states (in the order they attained statehood). I learn/share a variety of interesting facts about that state here on my blog and I choose one of them as my inspiration for a card.

This week's state is Ohio.

Ohio
Date of Statehood: March 1, 1803

Here are some things I learned about Ohio...

Fifty percent of the United States population lives within a 500-mile radius of Columbus, Ohio.

Ohio has the largest Amish population of any state in the nation.

Ohio is the leading producer of greenhouse and nursery plants.

There is an alley dedicated to drummer Dave Growl in his hometown of Warren, Ohio. The largest drum sticks in the world can be found there. They measure 23 feet long and weigh a half-ton.

The first concrete street in America, which is still in use today, was poured in 1891 near the Logan County Courthouse in Bellefontaine.

Ohio’s state flag is not a rectangle like other flags—it’s a pennant design, and it’s the only state flag in the United States with that design.  It was adopted in 1902, nearly a century after Ohio was granted statehood in 1803.

Life Savers candy was invented by Clarence Crane of Garrettsville, Ohio in 1912. They were touted as a “summer candy” since they didn’t melt like chocolate.

Ohio holds the record for the world’s largest basket, the Longaberger Company headquarters building in Newark. It’s seven stories high and 180,000 square feet.

Ohio's William Henry Harrison delivered the longest inauguration speech in U.S. presidential history only to die one month later. It's the shortest term of anyone to hold the office.

The last U.S. President to be elected without winning Ohio was John F. Kennedy in 1960.

Two of the most successful fast-food chains, Wendy's (Columbus) and Arby's (Boardman) were founded in Ohio. Though White Castle was founded in Wichita, Kansas in 1921, the company moved its headquarters to Columbus in 1936.

You can take tours of a house made entirely of trash, affectionately referred to as ‘House of Trash’ in Philo.

If a restaurant wants to serve horse meat in Ohio, they must display a sign that says, “Horse Meat Served Here.”

Akron Ohio was the first place to use Police cars.

It is illegal to fish for whales on a Sunday in Ohio… not that there’s any place to do that. Well, at least you can fish for them every other day of the week.

Women are prohibited from wearing patent leather shoes in public in Ohio. The reasoning? So that men can’t see reflections of the women’s underwear in their shoes. Obviously.

It is illegal for more than five women to live in one house in Ohio.

By state law, no one may be arrested on a Sunday or on the Fourth of July in Ohio, which is totally awesome and definitely not enforced.

It is unlawful to leave chewing gum in public places in Cleveland. That being said, for many years the patrons of Maid-Rite Sandwich Shop in Greenville have been sticking their gum outside the walls. Three of the building’s four walls are covered in gum, creating the infamous ‘Wall of Gum’.

I've decided to go with this bit of Ohio information for my card's inspiration... Cleveland is the 8th snowiest major city in the U.S. with 68.5 inches of snow annually according to The Weather Channel.

I grew up in Ohio and have visited that concrete street in Bellefontaine and it is looking a little worse for the wear! I did not know that the life savers guy was from Garrettsville! Very cool facts to go with your cool card! Yes Cleveland is very snowy and I love your card inside and out!

I love the law about fishing for whales! The legislature must have been really bored when they passed that one. Lol!

Great facts about Ohio. Born and raised there and some I didn't know. Sadly Longaberger no longer owns their big basket. Someone could fish forever and have a hard time finding a whale. LOL! I'm not surprised that Cleveland is one of the snowiest areas with all that lake effect snow. Adorable card and a cute image!
