2020 Travel the World - Week 5

I started a Travel the World Series last year. (It should be noted that I did a similar thing in 2018, only it was the 50 states.) For 50 weeks in 2019, I visited a different country (virtually) and shared facts about that country. I then selected one tidbit of information about that week's country as inspiration for a card. Fifty weeks; fifty countries... BUT there are 195 countries in the world so that was just a little over 25% of them. Of course I couldn't stop, so this year I'm continuing with fifty more countries, one per week.

This week's country is...

Bahrain

Bahrain is an island country which is located in the Persian Gulf.

The island country of Bahrain is spread over a total area of about 277 square miles. Due to its small size it is quite densely populated.

In Bahrain only 2.82% of the land is suitable for farming, the rest 92% is desert.

Due to the country's limited land space, the kingdom produces only a small amount of its food consumed and imports the rest of its food requirements.

The Tree of Life is a 400-year-old Mesquite tree which stands alone in the Desert of Bahrain with no known source of water. This tree attracts 50,000 tourists every year.

Bahrain is known for its scorching summer where temperature can reach up to 45 degree Celsius and the apparent temperature along with humidity can be as high as 50 degree Celsius.

The whole economy of Bahrain is based on oil and oil reserves. It is a very important financial center of the Arab world.

Arabic is the primary language of the country although English, Persian and Urdu are also spoken.

The highest point of Bahrain is ‘Jabal ad Dukhan’, meaning the Mountain of smoke. It is only 122 meters above sea level.

Water is expensive in Bahrain. Interestingly, oil is cheaper than water.

The Bahrain government provides free medical care, education, and old-age pensions to its people.

Bahrain has one of the largest mosques in the world.

Bahrain is connected to Saudi Arabia mainland by a bridge called the King Fahd Causeway.

The words pig, pork, and bacon are the most bleeped words on Bahrain television.

The Bahrain World Trade center is the world’s first high rise building to have incorporated wind turbine in its design.

I decided to let this Bahrain fact be the inspiration for this week's card... Most of the people of Bahrain are afraid of dogs (canine-phobic).

My son was in Bahrain back when he was in the service. His ship was docked there for about 3 months before heading to Japan where he spent most of his service time. Cute card.

A fabulous set of facts about Bahrain, thanks Jeanette. Love your card - and I find that kind of dog very acceptable (dogs on cards, that is!)
