G is for Garbage

I love to cook! Therefore, I love to collect recipes. So I decided to join a 6 X 6" A-Z Favorite Recipes Swap, hosted by Tracey over on splitcoaststampers.com. I was delighted to be able to use some of my Rubbernecker stamps, too! (Aren't they cute???)

My recipe had to feature the letter "G" so I chose a recipe that was handed down to me from my grandmother, who died long before I was born. My family lovingly calls the dish "Garbage".

I love the story behind this recipe as much as the recipe itself.

My dad’s mom died when he was just a teenager. She was a fantastic cook and he fondly remembered many of the wonderful things that she made, although she left few, if any, written recipes for her dishes.

When my parents met and married a number of years later, my dad told his new bride of some of the things his mother had cooked. One of her personal creations was Slumgollion, which is the recipe seen in this layout. He described it to my mom, who thought surely his memory had failed him. This could not really be what his mother had cooked. But being a loving new bride, she tried it anyway, preparing the dish my father remembered. Surprisingly, it was delicious and has become a family favorite!

Years later, when I was a teenager, we started calling the dish Garbage. After all, it is not very appealing to the eye. We can hardly wait until the tomatoes in the garden have ripened so we can enjoy this special treat.

I'm so thankful that my Grandma Nelson left us this delicious dish to enjoy. XOXO

I had to LOL when I started reading this one! My family has nicknamed one dish "Slop" because you just "slop" it all together, and another "Dog Food"! I am soooo relieved to know we aren't the only kooky cooks out there! LOL!
What a great way to share and pass down a family recipe. Your grandmother would be so proud at this tribute!
Hugs,
Catherine

I've heard of slumgullion! I didn't know what it was, but I've heard of it! Sounds like a good 'ole country dish to me!!! Your story is heartwarming, and the page is wonderful! The rubbernecker stamps are fabulous, and I really like how you popped up the "G"...for Garbage. Very creatively done, my friend!!
