Wise Words from Kris Kringle

It's no surprise to people who know me - I love Christmas!

Why?

Well, I love the twinkling lights, the memorable Christmas ornaments, the nativity sets I've collected over the years (some from foreign countries either I or loved ones have visited) and so much more.

I love the way our Santa accepts Brock and welcomes him every year at the mall where my husband takes him for their annual Christmas shopping trip.

I love Christmas music.

I love - LOVE - the reason we celebrate Christmas.

I love the way people show love to others during Christmas, too.

I wish we could capture this for more than just a day/season.

In the words of Kris Kringle...

Christmas isn't just a day.
It's a state of mind.

I used the stamp set Maybe Christmas from The Project Bin. It's a great set!

It's Just a Gray Hare

I participated in the Daily Marker 30 Day Coloring Challenge in November. Every day I chose a Whipper Snapper Designs image to color. I didn't make cards; I just colored images. Now I have a nice little stash of colored images to use for fast card-making.

The cute little Bunny on today's card is one of those images.

The inside of the card includes a Happy Birthday sentiment.

Personal Challenge 2018 - Week 49

This is the 49th week of my personal 50-week States of the Union Challenge. Each week I research one of the 50 United States (in the order they attained statehood). I share tidbits of information about the state here on my blog and I create a card that is inspired by something about that state.

This week's state (the 49th one to attain statehood) is...

Alaska
Date of Statehood: January 3, 1959

Alaska is the largest state in the union (1/5 of the entire USA and twice the size of Texas).

Alaska is the only state name that you can type on one row of a keyboard.

Juneau has no road access to the rest of the state. It is the only capital city in the United States accessible only by boat or plane. It is also the largest, covering 3,108 square miles.

Alaska has more coastline than the other 49 states combined.

Alaska’s largest lake, Lake Iliamna, is roughly the size of Connecticut.

Alaska is the only state to have coastlines on three different seas: the Arctic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Bering Sea.

Anchorage’s Lake Hood is the world’s largest and busiest seaplane base. Over 800 take offs and landings happen on a busy summer day.

If Manhattan had the same population density as Alaska, only 28 people would inhabit the island.

Alaska accounts for 25 percent of the oil produced in the United States.

Alaska is less than fifty miles from Russia.

Seventeen of the 20 highest peaks in the U.S. are located in Alaska.

The state flag was designed by a 13-year-old boy. After calling on students throughout the territory to submit their ideas, Alaska ultimately decided on Benny Benson’s scene of the Big Dipper and the North Star in 1927.

The state sport of Alaska is dog mushing, which was once the primary mode of transportation in most of Alaska. The Iditarod dog sledding race is the state’s largest sporting event.

In Alaska, there is approximately 1 bear to every 21 people.

Alaska broke their record high when temperatures reached 100° F in 1915. Their low of -80° F recorded in Alaska’s Endicott Mountains still holds the record for the nation's all-time low.

Because of their long summer days, Alaska is capable of producing some unusually oversized produce. Some notable specimens that have been harvested in recent years include a 35-pound broccoli, a 65-pound cantaloupe, and a 138-pound cabbage.

In Barrow, Alaska, the longest night lasts for 67 days. In the summer they make up for it with 82 days of uninterrupted sunlight.

Aurora borealis (northern lights) can be seen an average of 243 days a year in Fairbanks. The northern lights are produced by charged electrons and protons striking the earth’s upper atmosphere.

Many hotels in Alaska offer Northern Lights wake-up calls upon request.

Alaska has the lowest population density in the nation at one person per square mile.

There are 107 men for every 100 women in Alaska, the highest male-to-female ratio in the United States.

During the Klondike gold rush in 1897, potatoes were so highly valued for their vitamin C content that miners traded gold for them.

More than half the world’s glaciers can be found Alaska.

Moose, caribou, and bear killed by cars in Alaska are considered property of the state. When road kill is reported, the carcasses are butchered by volunteers and distributed as food to charity organizations.

Some of Alaska’s bizarre moose-specific legislation has included laws against pushing a moose from a plane, viewing a moose from a plane, and giving a moose beer.

It is illegal to whisper in someone’s ear while they are moose hunting in Alaska.

While it is legal to shoot bears in Alaska, waking a sleeping bear for the purpose of taking a photograph is prohibited.

No one may tie their pet dog to the roof of a car in Anchorage.

Owners of flamingos may not let their pet into Juneau barber shops.

I decided to go with this bit of Alaska information for my card's inspiration... About 1700 miles south of the geographic North Pole lies the Fairbanks suburb of North Pole, Alaska. The town’s famous Santa Claus House gift shop is open year-round, and thousands of letters addressed to Santa are sent to the zip code each year. (A real-life Santa Claus was even elected to City Council.)

Trying Something New with Unity

I recently had the honor of being the Growing in Unity (GIU) gal for a week. It was AWESOME! As you know (if you're here at my blog much), I absolutely LOVE Unity stamps! I own more Unity stamps than any other company and use them quite often.

At the conclusion of the week as a GIU gal, not only do you get to randomly choose two winners from those who commented on your blog, you also get to choose a stamp set from Unity for yourself. What a FABULOUS gift from Unity.

I pondered my selection - a lot! A LOT!!! I finally decided to go with a set that is not my normal style, wanting to stretch myself a bit. I chose Unity's A Good Life, a gorgeous "artsy" type of stamp set.

I could hardly wait to ink it up, once it arrived. I was super excited to try something different.

THANK YOU, Unity! I love my new stamp set!!!

By the way, not only do I love the flower (which I used on today's card), but I'm also really liking the quote, too. I'm sure you'll see it on a card soon!

About the same time as I was getting ready to play with my new stamp set, I discovered a card on the STAMPlorations blog that really caught my eye. I was inspired to give it a try myself. You can see that card/tutorial HERE.

I love how the image stamped! I'm not surprised... after all, this is Unity quality! I do wish that I had chosen to heat emboss it though, I think it would have added a vibrancy to this card.

Because of the details on the flower stamp that I used, I chose not to color the white very boldly. I didn't want to cover up the beauty of that amazing stamp. That being said, I did like the bright white on the card Deepti made and will definitely try this technique again at some point, I'm sure.

And... I had so much fun with the Unity A Good Life set that I've decided I'm going to use it again soon. I've been wanting to try doing a 7 Cards from 1 Stamp Set Challenge for some time now. I saw someone on FB who had done that and thought it seemed like a great idea. After making this card, I decided this was just the stamp set to use for that challenge and I'll be working on it soon. So this is the teaser for my 7 cards... #1. Stay tuned for #2-7.

It's Beginning to Look Like Christmas

Here it is - December. The second of December in fact. So it's time to get those Christmas cards (and handmade gifts) made, right?

And... SumMore Fun Creations is just the motivation some of us need. There is a brand new month-long challenge going on and the theme is Christmas Creations. Check it out on the SumMore Fun Creations Facebook page. Be sure to read the rules and then upload your card/projects into the challenge album.

My card was so easy to make! I used the Victorine Originals Swirl Christmas Tree stamp for my focal image and a sentiment from the Raisin Boat Merry Nature stamp set to complement the image.

The Swirl Christmas Tree stamp makes it so easy to add "ornaments" since there are dots at the ends of each of the swirls. I simple poked a hole in each dot and then added a tiny red brad into each hole.

Dogs vs. Cats

Are you a dog person or a cat person? While my husband and I chose not to have pets (much to the frustration of our daughter) I did grow up with both dogs and cats and I can attest to the truth of the statement on this card...

Dogs will come when you call them,
cats will take a message and may get back to you.
